Federal Retirement Application Help: SF 3107, SF 2801 & More
What You Need to Know About Federal Retirement Benefits
You can almost feel the sun on your skin that you’re going to get on that retirement cruise or you’re looking at real estate to be closer to your grandchild. As a federal civilian employee, there is an application process for retirement to ensure you get your maximum benefits. It can feel overwhelming when you first see the forms and learn more about the application process. However, you don’t have to handle all the paperwork and hoops by yourself. You can take advantage of application assistance and professional ensures that you don’t miss any of the benefits you’re entitled to as you move into retirement.
How Your Federal Retirement Benefit Is Calculated
You want to have a better understanding of your retirement benefits before you begin the application process to retire. One of the main benefits is the Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS). If you were employed afterJanuary 1, 1984, you’re entitled to an annuity payment through FERS. You, your agency, and the federal government have been paying into FERS since you began working with the government to make this payment possible. You’ll receive a monthly payment that reflects a yearly benefit between one and 1.1 percent for each year of the three highest years of salary. The payments are sent monthly.
For example, if you worked for the government for 25 years and you retired after age 62, you would receive 27.5 percent of the pay that you received for three best-paid years. Now, if the average of the three years were $60,000, you would receive $16,500 per year in monthly installments of $1,375.
Federal Retirement Forms: SF 3107 (FERS) and SF 2801 (CSRS)
As with everything else the federal government does, there’s a specific process for submitting your application for retirement. You need to complete all the steps to submit your application and have it approved. The steps are:
- Fill out and complete the “Agency Checklist of Immediate Retirement Procedures”, Standard Form 2801, Schedule D (CSRS) or 3107, Schedule D (FERS).
- You need to fill out and sign the “Certified Summary of Federal Service,” Standard Form 2801-1 (CSRS) or 3107-1 (FERS).
- Review your OPF. If any of your service employment isn’t documented, you need to get it added to your OPF. OPM might need to get involved in documenting this service. This can cause a delay in your application.
- You need to certify your Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) program and transfer it to OPM.
- OPM also needs you to transfer your enrollment in the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) program to them.
- Complete the Standard Form 50, “Notification of Personnel Action.”
- Once you have all your paperwork together, send it to the payroll office.
You don’t have to handle the application process by yourself.
Common Challenges and Solutions
One of the main challenges to the federal retirement application is incorrect information, such as missing signatures or dates. You can work with a professional who reviews the application and information for accuracy. Another common challenge is employees don’t fully understand the process. You can ask your supervisor and OPM for more information. Also, hiring a professional consultant can smooth the way. Contact information that’s out of date is also another common issue, so double-check it before submitting your application. Also, some people fail to put a survivor beneficiary on their paperwork. You must make sure that you have someone listed even if you aren’t married.
